Posted on: September 15, 2008

India’s GSM subscriber based (excluding Reliance Telecom) added 6.3 million new subscribers in August according to statistics from the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI). The total for the country has now reached 225.6 million.

Bharti Airtel is recorded as being the largest operator in the country – with a subscriber base of 74.7 million, while Vodafone Essar took second spot with 52.75 million – representing a market share of 23.4%. BSNL came third with 38.48 million subscribers.

Fourth place went to Idea with 29.3 million customers and fifth place went to Aircel with 13.1 million.

Reliance Telecom does not provide subscriber numbers to the COAI – although figures from the Mobile World subscriber database reports that the company ended May ‘08 with just over 8 million GSM subscribers (compared to 42.7 million for its CDMA base).
