Nokia Siemens to invest INR3bn in new India plant

Posted on: October 18, 2008

Nokia Siemens Networks said Thursday it will invest INR3 billion (about $70 million) over the next three years in a new manufacturing plant it has built near the southern Indian city of Chennai.

The $70 million plant, inaugurated earlier in the day, will be used to manufacture and distribute mobile communications products, keeping in mind India’s rapid growth in mobile subscribers, the company said in a statement.

India is the world’s largest telecommunications market, adding about eight million subscribers every month.

Nokia Siemens Networks, a provider of telecommunication network solutions, is a joint venture between Finland’s Nokia Corp. and Germany’s Siemens AG.

The new plant will manufacture Nokia Siemens Networks telecom equipment such as mobile base station controllers, microwave radio and access line-card products, the company said.

“The first deliveries of radio access products manufactured and distributed from the site to customers in India are planned for later this month,” the company added.

The investment will help generate 400 new jobs, Nokia Siemens Networks added.
