SIMS to be activated through NADRA from January 2009

Posted on: October 22, 2008

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that, starting from 31 January 2009, all SIM cards sold in the country will only be activated after verification of customer data by the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA); the ruling comes as the PTA looks to clamp down on illegal use of mobile phone SIMs.

Additionally, plans to block SIM cards that have already been sold but remain unverified continue, with any connections sold before 31 August 2008 that do not meet the PTA’s Standing Operating Procedures (SOP) set to be blocked by 21 October. Under the SOP, ten SIM cards can be issued against a single computerised national identity card (CNIC). Mobile operators have been warned that the PTA will conduct a survey to check violations of the SOP in early November, with operators who fail to comply with the regulations set to face penalties.
