TRAI and DoT clash over MNP implementation (India)

Posted on: December 7, 2008

According to Telecom Tiger, the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will oppose new proposals by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for the implementation of Mobile Number Portability (MNP). Recent plans revealed by the DoT have called for the country to be split into two zones for the purpose of MNP, directly contradicting the TRAI recommendation to operate a single zone. The DoT has also suggested a INR10 million (USD200,000) entry fee for the company that will set up MNP, despite the TRAI recommending no fee be charged. Additionally, the DoT has ignored TRAI suggestions that operators should be allowed to hold up to 10% in the company implementing MNP.
