Vietnam’s mobile operators attract larger subscriber base

Posted on: January 5, 2009

According to a local media report, mobile phone operators in Vietnam are on a spree of raising their subscriber base by launching lucrative discount tariff packages.

MobiFone leads the charts by adding 250,000 new subscribers in a day followed by Viettel with 160,000 a day. VinaPhone takes he number three position as it adds 80,000 new subscribers daily, while other major providers S-Fone and EVN Telecom have seen an rising number of newly registered subscribers during the past week.
The regulators of the country have been taken aback as to how the market is experiencing a sudden jump in the net addition of subscribers.

According to the experts the operators are creating a strong standing for themselves by using the tools of marketing and by providing lucrative offers, necessary even in a sagging economy.
Though many people anticipate this as a short-term increase as mobile phone providers are racing against a new government law that becomes effective in January, which will stop them from allowing big discounts like “buy one-get three” or a newly registered pre-paid account offered with a 100 per cent bonus.
So these discounts are short-lived until the law is introduced.
