Posted on: January 14, 2009

The total number of active mobile phone subscriber increased marginally in December, after falls were seen since September.

The total number of active users stood at 44.64 million at the end of December, from 43.96 million in November, according to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory commission (BTRC) website.

The leading mobile operator Grameenphone has kept the top position with 20.99 million subscribers. Banglalink, in second place, has 10.33 million subscribers.

AKTEL registers 8.20 million active users, Warid 2.33 million and Citycell 1.81 million.

State-run mobile operator Teletalk is in last position with just 980,000 subscribers.

The number of active mobile phone subscribers went down in September for the first time in Bangladesh, with three leading operators witnessing slight falls.

Industry insiders had said the dip in numbers did not mean the sector was saturated or declining, but was a result of necessary actions against unregistered SIM cards.
